MEXICO DAYS: Day of the Dead "Altares" Competition

Date & Time:
November 2, 2016 | 12:00 pm
Location:
MacEwan Centre South Courtyard

Join the Latin American Students' Association (LASA) for the Day of the Dead: "Altares" Competition. The day of the dead has been celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American countries for many years as a day for the living to remember their departed relatives. "Ofrendas" (offerings) are set up on altars to honour those that have departed.

LASA will be setting up an altar beginning at 9 a.m. and everyone is invited to participate by bringing photos, poems, letters or offerings in order to commemorate a special someone that has passed away. The competition will take place between several Latin American Studies classes and the best altar will be determined by a representative from the Consulate of Mexico at noon.

There will also be a drop-in workshop on making "Calavera" (sugar skulls) and "Literary Calaveritas" (humorous poems or drawings making fun of the living).

This event is sponsored by LASA, Latin American Studies, and the Consulate of Mexico in Calgary. Contact lasa@ucalgary.ca for more information.
