 PUBLIC LECTURE

Department of Anthropology Colloquium:
"Civil Society and Economic Reform: Cuba and China"

Dr. Adrian H. Hearn
Institute for International Studies, The University of Technology, Sydney, Australia

Wednesday 14 September 2005 / 12:00 - 13:30 hrs
SS 821 (Social Sciences Building)

This seminar talk examines economic reform in Cuba and China since the Soviet collapse of 1989 to clarify the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI), economic growth, and civic participation. Drawing examples from Cuba and China, I argue that the potential of FDI to stimulate domestic economic activity and widen avenues of democratic governance is greatly enhanced when governments actively build partnerships in two key areas: First, with domestic industry to promote the interdependence of foreign multinationals and local enterprise, thereby stimulating economic growth through trade and supply networks; and Second, with civil society actors ranging from neighbourhood associations to religious communities, to encourage civic participation and local initiative.
